Food Sustainability Lecture & Film Series

About the Project

The Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC), with support from the Food Sustainability Endowment, is presenting a 2-year Public Lecture and Film Screening series focused on issues directly relating to food sustainability, especially as they relate to broader issues relevant to rural sustainability.

This project is made possible through a grant from the Sustainable Food Endowment.

Previous Events

On October 22, 2025, the community was invited to attend an evening to consider “the land and those who sustain it” through film and conversation at the Bailey Theatre in Camrose, Alberta. A screening of the 2016 documentary film "Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry" was presented along side sample fare from the Food Artisans of Camrose County.  After the film, attendees enjoyed a conversation between Ben Aguilar of the Berry Center (Kentucky, USA) and Joseph Wiebe, PhD. of the Ronning Centre (Camrose).

This event was presented in partnership with the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life, the Food Artisans of Camrose County and with generous support from the Sustainable Food Endowment.

On February 11, 2025, the ACSRC, Camrose County and the Food Artisans of Camrose County invited guests to enjoy sample fare from the Food Artisans of Camrose County while they viewed the 2018 documentary "Before the Plate". After the film, a Q&A panel of distinguished guests, Nicola Irving (Irvings Farm Fresh Ltd), Tyson Wright (Strada Coffee Co. & Artisan Bakery, Old Red Barn) and Greg King (Augustana, UAlberta), shared their take on how themes from the film are present in our local community. Attendees were invited to ask questions and share their thoughts with the panel.
As part of this event, the Camrose Art Society curated "Art To Table" an art show exhibiting artists' interpretation of food and sustainability in our local community. Guests were invited to check out "Art to Table" in the Spotlight Bistro before the main event.
This event is made possible through a partnership with Camrose County and a generous contribution from the Sustainable Food Endowment.

On October 28, 2024, community members gathered for "Connecting to Land Through Food: A Community Conversation".  The evening was one of community building, knowledge sharing, and storytelling. The Food Artisans of Camrose County curated a wonderful selection of local food that was enjoyed alongside panel guests. Panel guests included Alex Pulwicki (Young Agrarians), and Andrea and Denis Forstbauer (Grey Arrow Farms).  Discussion centered around ways to build a strong and active community of new farmers in the prairies.
