Get to know...Lauren Ong

This month, we're excited to highlight Lauren Ong, Development Officer at the Alberta School of Business. We learn about her favourite show, hobbies and her best advice for new colleagues!

Lauren Ong professional headshotWhat's a fun fact about you that most people wouldn't know?

I was a varsity soccer player and played centreback (defence) for the Macewan Griffins. We won a National Championship in 2013. Shortly thereafter, I retired from my soccer career. It was nice to end on a high note!

What's your favourite way to spend a weekend or day off?

Making a weekend trip to Calgary, the mountains or Victoria to visit friends and family. If I have a weekday off in the city, I love spending my time thrifting at “the bins” which is otherwise known as the Goodwill Impact Centre.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I have been itching to get back to Singapore. That is where my dad is from.

What’s a hobby or skill you’ve recently picked up (or would like to try)?

I am in my pickleball era. My husband and I dream of being good enough to play pro, which we are nowhere near yet. We have all the gear. I’m sure the skill will follow soon.

What’s a book, movie, or TV show you’re currently enjoying?

After the pandemic, I became a big fan of Survivor. I am really looking forward to Season 50 (yes, can you believe there are that many seasons!?) that will be airing in the spring.

What inspires or motivates you the most in your day-to-day life?

Improvement and innovation! I welcome change. Things don’t get better without it. Also, perspective helps quite a bit.

Can you share a bit about your role and what brought you to the Alberta School of Business?

I am a fundraiser for the Alberta School of Business. I am a business alumna myself, and I am proud and fortunate to be in a position where I can share more about the school’s ambitions. It’s wonderful to meet like-minded people who are keen to support the school.

What’s something about your job or department that you wish more people knew?

Philanthropy is a superpower. It is gratifying to see how your contributions can make a difference and shape the world you envision. I find that many alumni and members of the public are unaware of the possibility of establishing a scholarship. It's a powerful way to invest in future generations, and it comes with valuable tax benefits.

What’s been your most memorable moment at the Alberta School of Business so far?

My favourite moment has been attending our annual Cap and Gown event that takes place during Â鶹ÊÓƵ Days (Alumni Weekend). Each September, we gather and celebrate our students’ 50th and 60th milestone anniversaries. I very much enjoyed touring our business alumni around campus and showing them what had changed over the years.

What’s one piece of advice you'd share with a new colleague joining the School?

Sync your meeting schedule to your smartwatch and set it to notify you quietly, allowing you to (secretly) keep track of the time.
