L. Philippe Rheault assumed leadership of The China Institute in 2023 following a 25-year career in the Canadian diplomatic service, which included five postings across Greater China and two assignments as Consul General, heading two of Canada’s four diplomatic missions in the People’s Republic of China.

The China Institute serves as Canada’s principal academic hub for China studies and policy dialogue. As Director, Philippe has positioned the Institute at the intersection of policy and scholarship—deepening understanding of China, examining its role in emerging global challenges, and charting pathways for informed and productive Canada–China engagement.

He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ and is a frequent commentator in Canadian and international media. Beyond his academic and public engagement, Philippe delivers advanced China courses for the Canada School of Public Service and the Canadian Foreign Service Institute.

His current work explores how middle powers can navigate strategic competition between China and the United States. Philippe holds degrees in philosophy, political science, and law, and is professionally fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English, and French.
