Erzsébet Árvay, PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary

Szervusz! I am a historian and a doctoral candidate in international relations and political science. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in English and American Studies and a Master’s Degree in Modern History. My research examines the strategies employed by the Hungarian People’s Republic to manage its émigré communities from the late 1940s to the late 1980s. I explore how the Hungarian state developed institutions and policies to engage with Hungarians living in the Western world.
At the Wirth Institute, I am excited to continue this work and finish my dissertation. I look forward to exchanging ideas with colleagues, learning from new perspectives, and contributing to a lively scholarly community. I would love to connect with people in Edmonton with Central European heritage and to learn more about their experiences and traditions.
When I’m not doing research, you’ll most likely find me outdoors. Hiking is my favourite way to recharge, and I can’t wait to explore the river valley and Elk Island National Park and to discover the beauty of Canadian wildlife.
