Tereza Trojanová, PhD candidate in Sociology at Charles University, Czechia

Ahoj!

My name is Tereza (yes, with a “z”) and I’m excited to become this year’s Czech fellow at the Wirth Institute. My home institution is Charles University in Prague, where I’ve just started my third year of PhD in sociology. Before that, I studied philosophy and sociology as an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where I also completed my master’s degree in social research.

My sociological research interests revolve around education, gender inequality, and academia. In Aberdeen, I became involved with a “decolonising the curriculum” group, which importantly shaped the way I think about academia and research. I’m grateful for opportunities to learn more about histories of oppression, and I aim to include a “decolonial perspective” in any research project I do.

I have significantly benefited from my international experiences, and decided to explore internationalisation sociologically. Therefore, my current PhD project explores the internationalisation of academia and its relationship to social mechanisms of inequality. Starting from the policy/normative discourse on internationalisation and its dovetailing into the reproduction of global inequality, I continue to look at how individual practices of internationalisation may help build academic capital in specific contexts.

My side-kick interest is looking at the role of language (and multilingualism) in qualitative research, and how the languages we use in academia are reflective of global power dynamics.

Outside of academia, simple things bring me joy: coffee, moving my body, time spent outdoors, Harry Potter (although JKR needs to be called out), adventure, and spending time with great people close to me.

Now I can’t wait to become “at home” at UAlberta. Please do not hesitate to get in touch about shared topics of interest!
