Application of the new PDFA Collective Agreement

21 October 2025

The university and the Postdoctoral Fellows Association (PDFA) have negotiated a renewal collective agreement for a term of Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2028. The agreement includes a three per cent salary increase each year, retroactive to the start of the agreement and an increase in the minimum full time salary rate in 2025 to $45,000. This increase restores Postdoctoral Scholar Employee pay to levels more comparable to other post secondary institutions. PDFA employees will also now be identified as Postdoctoral Scholars (PDS).

Full time and part time Postdoctoral Scholars with an active appointment on the date of ratification will receive either the increase to the new minimum salary rate (prorated for part time) or a salary increase of three per cent, whichever is greater. The university will process retroactive payments to Postdoctoral Scholars in the Oct. 16 to 30 pay period. Active employees will see this adjustment on their November 10 pay. The increase is retroactive to the later of January 1, 2025 or the PDS Employee’s start date.

Former employees are entitled to the pay increase retroactively for the time that they were employed between January 1, 2025 and their termination date. Former employees will need to contact HR Services (Shared Services) through the Staff Service Centre by calling 780-492-8000 by noon on Dec. 24, 2025. The PDFA will be contacting former PDS Employees.

We understand that retroactive adjustments might not have been planned for when budgets were developed for this year, creating potential financial pressures for some projects. Principal investigators with PDS employees can contact their department chairs and HR Partners, or visit the Administering Employment of Postdoctoral fellows page for support and more information.
